The first phase of the country's solar power plan was enacted this summer. Dubbed "The National Photovoltaic Household Electrification Program," 1,601 solar panels have been installed to date. The final plan is to equip 500,000 households with a total of 12,500 solar panels.
At a cost of around 200 million, the program evidences Peru's dedication to increase the use of renewable energy sources among its 24 million inhabitants.
"This program is aimed at the poorest people, those who lack access to electric lighting and still use oil lamps, spending their own resources to pay for fuels that harm their health," said Merino.
